When you write or print on the top sheet (the original), every stroke is automatically duplicated on the sheets below. A 2-part set gives you one original and one copy; a 3-part set gives you an original and two copies; and a 4-part set gives you three copies in addition to the original.
Each part is typically printed in a different colour — white for the original, yellow for the first copy, pink for the second copy, and blue for the third — making it instantly clear which copy belongs to which party at a glance.
